bzr branch is slow and memory-hungry (just a data point)

Exactly.

The current format is a file store. Each time you modify a file, the
new version is stored (gzipped) in the .bzr directory.

The weave format is a kind of "line store", so, portions of files that
are not modified will not be stored several times.
