My problem with this is, that IMHO the single letters are faster to read
and easier to spot anomalies. Ie. it's quite fast to scan a list of 'M's
for 'C', while it's slower to scan a list of 'modified's for
'conflict's.

Um, thinking of it again, it'd be easier if they were capitalized:
Added foo.c
Modified foo.h
Added bar.c
Conflicted bar.h

I'd say 'ignored' should not be capitalized to be visually more
distinct. Still, '~' for ignored and '?' for unknown are visually more
distinct.

... except you still need a machine parsable output, as this one is not.

Also I would *NOT* like this one. It is all a mess of letters and
accents and not really visually distinct.

Their manual says it stays for "merGed". Yes, that is simply broken (CVS
used 'P' as "Patched" for that, which was both more logical and visually
distinct).
