As I said: there is no convenient support for global options (that I
could find, but perhaps I missed it) - in particular, there is no
provision for them taking arguments.

You have me scratching my head in puzzlement here.  I have no idea
what "existing infrastructure" you are referring to if not the one I
used.  I must have missed something.  Could you briefly clue me in?
