Because checking if you are up-to-date is an expensive operation, I
would tend to make it optional. I frequently set up things so that it
updates everytime I do anything, and I don't really like waiting for it
to check 1600 files.
But it wouldn't be hard to just grab the inventory, and write out the
last changed revision for each of the entries.
I would certainly be willing to add it if you feel it is worth it.
