You might like to try the --lsprof option instead of --profile to use
the new Python profiler.  (Thanks to Denys for suggesting and
integrating it.)  I think you can get it from here:

  http://codespeak.net/svn/user/arigo/hack/misc/lsprof/

(I'm not sure if that's the best location though.)

It may give much better results, though possibly not if it's IO-bound.
