creating checkouts, bound branches and standalone branches from an existing branch

If we're going to make it easy/common to unbind and re-bind, I'd go
with putting it more as a branch than a checkout.  Given that we have
checkouts and bound branches, the bound branch usecase seems a little
more like a "Let me keep my branch automatically in sync with that one
where possible, but work independently as necessary" than a "Let me
work on that branch".
