Sigh. It's a rubbish server anyway. I really need to get a sensible provider.

That was me. I had my FTP client not showing hidden files, so it
wasn't deleting the .bzr directories, and hence couldn't delete the
directory as it wasn't empty. The ownership was a red herring. Sorry
for the false alarm.

I just found the comment in the FAQ: "Bazaar is designed so you can
publish your branch on standard (dumb) servers." If I'd noticed that
earlier, I might have been a bit less confused...
Looks like I've still got too many misconceptions from reading about
other DVCSs (most notably Mercurial)...
