I get the best of both worlds by using Gmane, as mentioned by many
others here. I go to the forum, but I do so using a standard messaging
protocol (NNTP) using my choice of NNTP client.
My main complaint against "web forums" is they're an application
interface running on a remote machine, with all the downsides implied
by that: I can't choose a different interface, I have to log in
specifically to that machine to use the application, I get little
opportunity to customise, etc.
If any significant number of others feel the same way, you'll get a
split in the user community along technical rather than organisational
lines. Surely to be avoided.
