Overriding sys.stdout and sys.stderr, as you said, is the right
approach...but not enough.

I've done something quite similar for the xmlrpc service in
bzr-xmlouput, but I'm pretty sure it 'll need one or two tweaks so it
can be used in bzr-gedit.
