I don't know well for bzr - but I think the word "template" is it.

In ClearCase, *many* commands can be used with a -fmt option for better
parsing by
batch procedures; and it uses printf-style formats which stand for the
same thing in every
command, e.g. "%c" means the comment of a transaction (checkout,
checkin, making a
branch, placing a label on a version, etc.).

The idea behind this is to have unique set of these special %... format
string
characters available to all commands.

Sorry for the noise - comparing open source bzr against commercial
ClearCase ...
