I'll sign up for 'gives no worse an error' :). I don't know how well we
handle it today - if we do well I'll preserve it, but I don't want to
block this improvement on improving that case.

as far as NEWS goes, I'm figuring we'll write a NEWS message about the
group of things we're doing; this is kindof an embarassing one to write
up :)
