Creating a new branch based off sub-directory of an existing branch?

Yes, I have seen the same error...
For the record, I only recently tried split, to answer the question:
Is it possible to do a partial clone/branch with either bazaar, mercurial or git?

I did the upgrade command as suggested, using --default-rich-root as the list of formats 
was quite confusing, I chose one semi-randomly, the "default" seeming a reasonable choice...

I believe the rich-root format is stable for quite some time now. Somebody more 
knowledgeable than me can confirm (or not!).
