History horizons: how hard can they be ?

Perhaps that's solvable by having a class of 'wraith' revisions, with
[some of?] the revision info, but not bothering with inventories or
texts etc.  It wouldn't be as small, but a lot smaller than the full
history.  Would probably call for a whole lot of deeper changes to
support, though.
