bzr-git question

The documentation at http://bazaar-vcs.org/BzrForeignBranches/Git is a
bit sub-optimal, hence this question here :-)

When Bazaar branches from a Git repository how is it determined which
Git branch is branched?

(I guess this question also applies to Mercurial?)
