In git it is almost trivially worked around by judicious use of rebase.

Yes, in part, though to be fair the examples put forward on
emacs-devel (and the defense for the bazaar way) seemed to imply that
the quality of the pre-merge commits was irrelevant because it is
"hidden history" unless you use -n0.

Yes. I suppose (or hope, at least) that's what we'll eventually settle into.
