The OS packages are designed to work with that system's built-in Python interpreter and libraries, especially because they contain compiled code that takes advantage of the latest compiler and linker features. In general, if you have a custom Python installation, the recommended approach is to install from source, use easy_install or pip, or use a package manager like MacPorts.
2.0.3 and 2.1.0b4 were released just today, please be patient a bit :)
