I find it very useful as a meaningful indicator of how distant the
ancestor was in the history. I also find it useful that each commit in
the current branch has a regularly incrementing revno, regardless of
merges.

Sure, there's no denying that seeing the graph can be more useful. That
doesn't detract from the usefulness of dotted revnos.
