I think I must have done something wrong . . .

I don't have a /usr/lib/python2.6/site-packages !

I have a /usr/lib/pymodules/python2.6/launchpadlib
and /usr/lib/pymodules/python2.6/lazr all the files are symbolic links
to files in /usr/share/pyshared/launchpadlib
and /usr/share/pyshared/lazr respectively. There are no pyc files. I
think there were some but there aren't now.

"sudo update-python-modules -a" doesn't seem to do anything, certainly
it doesn't seem to recreate any .pyc files.

I still get the message:

/usr/lib/pymodules/python2.6/lazr/uri/__init__.py:19: UserWarning: Module launchpadlib was already imported from /usr/lib/pymodules/python2.6/launchpadlib/__init__.py, but /usr/lib/pymodules/python2.6 is being added to sys.path
  import pkg_resources

for all bzr actions :-((
