multi-pull using the parent_location on the server branch?

I'm trying to pull three branches from a shared repo on my server over 
ssh to my client laptop, and one of the branches on the server has a 
parent_location set to an even older server that's not used, and when I 
multi-pull from a client, it fails to connect to this location.  Why is 
it even trying?  Seems like it should just be pulling these three branch 
subdirectories into the shared repo locally?

In this case I can go edit the branch.conf (is there a remote way to do 
this?) but in general it's weird the command would fail for this.
