Bugzilla seems to have eaten my last comment, stating that it wasn't metacity
crashing and restarting (same pid and process start time, before and after)

A recent update of various libraries seems to have fixed the problem - although
I'm still not sure what could have caused that behaviour aside from metacity
crashing and restarting (which wasn't the case).
