The issue (my point of view) is with creating more unneccessary dependencies for
gimp. When compiling GIMP from source tarball, it doesn't depend on aalib.
Moreover, newer versions of aalib in ubuntu depend additionaly on libslang.
My suggestion is to pack it separately and provide it in gimp's suggests or
reccomends
