I have a similar problem.  On my 1024x764 display, if I first use the default
Ubuntu background (Ubuntu Sparkles 1600x1200), then try to switch to "No
background", it will switch to the picker color for maybe 1 second before
reverting back to the original background image; but only a portion of that
background sparkles image will now appear.  This occur every single time.
