This was a fresh hoary install, so I'm not sure either, so I looked at the postinst.

As far as I can see, although I have a debconf value for
shared/default-x-display-managed ("gdm") I don't have a debconf value for
gdm/daemon_name -- which means there's nothing to write to the file.
