Browsing /usr/lib/python2.4/site-packages/serpentine/preferences.py I see that
Serpentine actually looks for the GConf key /apps/serpentine/temporary_dir .
Creating it and setting it solves the problem for me, but I wouldn't expect
ordinary users to discover it this way :-)

Since UI freeze is today, a solution might be to just let the .deb create the
gconf key, so that atleast medium-power-users may discover it...

Where (and how) do I get the source for the Ubuntu version of Serpentine? I
might be able to cook up a patch later today...
