Okay, the bug is definitely NOT fixed. Although I was able to maintain a
session after a soft shutdown, when I quit Firefox immediately after posting my
last message, my desktop background image became solarized for a second (some of
the darker colors became inversed), and then it dumped me back to the login
screen. *That* had never happened before! I logged back in, but noticed that
the mouse was acting jumpy, so I quickly selected shutdown. Everything vanished
except for the background image, which solarized again, and began scrolling
slowly to the left. After perhaps 90 seconds of this, the power simply went
off, without any obvious shutdown sequence taking place. Nothing remotely like
that had ever happened before.
The next time I booted up and logged in, I opened Firefox, used it for a few
minutes, and then had it die when a system notification of new upgrades appeared
(for the PERL modules). I opened up Update Manager and attempted to install the
upgrades, but looking at the detailed view of the installation process, I
noticed that it said "Segmentation Fault 7145", and appeared to hang shortly
thereafter. Then a message appeared saying that Update Manager could not get an
exclusive lock, and then it vanished without me dismissing it. Shortly
afterwards, the keyboard stopped responding to input, and about 30 seconds later
the mouse and the screen froze, and I had to do a hard reset. So, yeah, the
problem isn't fixed.
Honestly, given how completely unique and irreproducable every crash is, I would
ordinarily believe that I simply had flaky hardware -- except for the fact that
every *second* time I boot Ubuntu, it works like a dream. If I had flaky
hardware, this wouldn't be possible!
This is driving me nuts.... somebody please help?
