The reason for the different behavior is that nautilus ejects the device, while
pumount just unmounts it. However, at least on my box the devices stay around
even after ejection, they are just powered off (which is the reason why we eject
USB devices in the first place). Can you please attach your /var/log/kern.log
here after a full plugin/mount/eject cycle?

Scott, what could be the reason that on some boxes /dev/sda1 stays around after
ejecting a device, and sometimes not? Is this rather a kernel or an udev issue?
