My Sony Vaio's recently gone kaput, so I can't actually try what I'm
suggesting, but looking at the source suggests the output of these
commands would be useful

    cat /proc/apm
    find /proc/acpi/battery | grep -E '/stat(us|e)$' | xargs head -c1m

since that's where the applet gets its information from.
