Here is the output from both of the suggestions:

jonah at bullit:~ $  find /proc/acpi/battery | grep -E '/stat(us|e)$' | xargs head -c1m
==> /proc/acpi/battery/BAT2/state <==
present:                 no

==> /proc/acpi/battery/BAT1/state <==
present:                 yes
capacity state:          ok
charging state:          discharging
present rate:            0 mA
remaining capacity:      3583 mAh
present voltage:         42176 mV

And I'm not using apm, ergo such directory (/proc/apm) does not exist.

Output of acpi follows:
jonah at bullit:~ $ acpi
     Battery 1: discharging, 87%,  remaining
