           Summary: gnome-system-log does not monitor
           Product: Ubuntu
           Version: unspecified
          Platform: Other
        OS/Version: other
            Status: UNCONFIRMED
          Severity: normal
          Priority: P2
         Component: gnome-utils
        AssignedTo: seb128 at ubuntu.com
        ReportedBy: jdthood at yahoo.co.uk
         QAContact: desktop-bugs at lists.ubuntu.com

Package: gnome-utils
Version: 2.11.1-0ubuntu1

There are several problems with gnome-system-log.

I start gnome-system-log from Applications|System Tools|System Log.
The latest entries of /var/log/syslog are displayed. However, no new
entries are displayed as they are added.

I click on Log|Monitor and then "Monitor" has a check beside it.
The latest entries of /var/log/syslog are displayed. New entries are
displayed as they are added.

Thus the first issue is that the default mode should be Monitor=on.

Next I click on /var/log/mail.log. It displays the _earliest_
logged entries, not the latest ones. That is the second issue.

I click on /var/log/syslog. It no longer displays new entries as
they are added, even though there is still a checkmark beside
"Monitor" on the "Log" dropdown menu.

I tried this program about a year ago in Debian and had the same
sorts of problems with it. Since the program is hardly usable I
returned to using "tail --follow=name /var/log/syslog" in a
terminal window. I thought Ubuntu might have fixed the program,
but it seems not.
