Well, you can close this bug now.  I'm running the latest versions from Hoary
but that's a moot point.  I ran some files through gedit and again with gnumeric
(both the latest from Hoary) and itt's started behaving again.  Still not quite
what I expected from previous uses (the margins are a bit bigger) but it's
working. I'm still scratching my head.  Sorry about this.
