Summary: Unable to re-install printer driver
           Product: Ubuntu
           Version: unspecified
          Platform: i386
        OS/Version: Linux
            Status: UNCONFIRMED
          Severity: normal
          Priority: P2
         Component: gnome-cups-manager
        AssignedTo: martin.pitt at ubuntu.com
        ReportedBy: ubuntu-bugs at baxpace.com
         QAContact: desktop-bugs at lists.ubuntu.com

In Ubuntu (Gnome) if you open up the printer manager through
System->Administration->Printing and use the "New Printer" icon to bring up a
printer install wizard, you will eventually get the option to select a driver
for the printer. If the manufacturer/driver is not listed, there is an option to
"Install driver" where you can choose a ppd file.

I downloaded a PPD file for my Konica Minolta 2400DL, installed it using the
wizard, and completed the printer set-up process. Afterwards I found that some
settings were wrong. I removed the printer and attempted to go through the "New
Printer" wizard again. When I get to the stage where I'm asked to choose my
driver, I found that the manufacturer of my printer is still not listed
("Konica" is listed but this does not contain my printer model). So, I assumed
that I'd just have to tell it where to get the driver again. I clicked "Install
driver" and selected the PPD file and got the message "The PPD
/usr/share/cups/model/km_en.ppd is already installed", and now I cannot complete
the New Printer wizard because I cannot find my printer model listed under any
of the manufacturers despite the fact that I previously installed the PPD for
it, and I cannot re-install the driver.

Several things should, I believe, happen in this situation:

1. I should be permitted to re-install a printer driver without an error.
2. Any printer drivers I install should appear in the Manufacturer/Model list.
3. There should be a method of choosing a specific printer driver instead of
going via the Manufacturer/Model route, e.g. an "All" manufacturer and an "All
drivers" model, for example (although this is a bit messy).
