I've tried gamin 0.1.2 for a little while (compiled from source; not package), and everything seems to be working fine now. 
 
Case in point: running "./configure" for compiling the new gamin package resulted in the old gam_server taking up 50% CPU at times (as 
reported by top); after installing the new gamin package, gam_server CPU usage didn't rise above 2% for performing the same action.
