Sorry, minor correction: the path is ~/.local/share/applications. Web browsers
should support tab completion. ;-)
After nuking all my *.desktop files in ~/.local/share/applications, Totem was no
longer associated with directories (that is: I no longer had an entry for "Open
in Totem..." on the context menu of a folder in the Nautilus file manager).
After using the MIME type settings under the Properties context menu, a file
totem-usercustom.desktop was created, also with the entry "NoDisplay=true".
Perhaps an earlier version of Nautilus or Rhythmbox erroneously called the MIME
type customizations file rhythmbox.desktop instead of rhythmbox-usercustom.desktop.
I wasn't suggesting the problem was in Ubuntu's package file set (clearly the
dpkg wouldn't install files in my home directory), but it seems possible it is
(or was) a bug in one of the GNOME Desktop applications.
