oh, that. That's a nautilus feature, go to "Edition, preferences" and set
"Afficher les fichiers caches et de sauvegarde"

That's not Ubuntu specific, that's GNOME, and it handles non-ascii chars fine
but they have to be UTF-8. Since hoary the default locale is UTF-8 (fr_FR.UTF-8
for you by example) which is portable and works fine with nautilus.

you can changes gconf keys value with gconf editor, the key pointed says to
nautilus-cd-burner to be verbose

This bug seems to be "I have non-ascii/non-UTF-8 files and nautilus doesn't like
that", the verbose mode would say which files are considered as incorrects by it.

that's to get the verbose mode printed here instead of using the logs for that

because you use this nautilus feature. Backup files are mean to be used by
software so user are not force to have them listed.

these are config options.
Anyway you description of the bug speaks about encoding issue which is probably
due to some filename with non-utf8 name and no to ~ files. Do you have such
files? What locale do you use?
