Okay, here's the report.
Steps taken:
1. boot system and login without any cameras attached
2. start gvm dump as described at
http://www.ubuntulinux.org/wiki/DebuggingRemovableDevices
3. turn on HP Photosmart M305, make sure there are no pictures in the camera,
plug in USB cable
4. gvm pops up import dialog, but gtkam finds no pictures
5. detach camera
6. turn on brandless camera (labeled by gphoto2 as an Argus DC-1510), make sure
there are no pictures in it, plug in
7. wait for gvm, no import dialog this time
8. detach camera
9. take photo with HP M305 and (with camera still on) plug in again
10. gvm again pops up its import dialog, gtkam finds the photo
11. detach camera
12. take photo with brandless camera and plug in again
13. wait for gvm, again no import dialog
14. detach camera
15. end gvm logging
16. delete pictures from both cameras, plug both in again
17. get lshal and dmesg dumps as instructed
