Ah, this is a new bug in esound 0.2.35

http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=59779

Comment from a user:
"I have a rather ppor onboard soundcard that only supports playing sound at
48khz. I'm using the intel8x0 alsa driver from the 2.6.8 kernel, and alsa-lib
1.0.5-r3.
esd 0.2.35, unlike the previous version, plays back 44.1khz sound without
resampling it to 48khz. This can seen with the output from, e.g. mpg321:"

I see this bug too on my via82xx card.
