The following happens when installing/removing a printer:
When installing a ppd it is copied to /usr/share/cups/model/<file>.ppd
If you remove a printer with gnome-cups-manager the ppd in /usr/share/cups/model
is NOT removed.
If you want to reïnstall the printer you should now search your printers
Manufacturer/Model/Driver in the list, the previously installed driver for your
printer is normally present as the recommended driver.
If you try to reïnstall the printer by clicking "Install driver..." and
selecting the ppd file you get an error: "The PPD
/usr/share/cups/model/<file>.ppd is already installed" because this file already
exists.
When clicking "OK" on this error you are pointed to the right
Manufacturer/Model/Driver that you installed previously. Just Clicking Apply
installs the printer again.
Conclusion: the error message given by gnome-cups-manager is confusing.
More intuïtive would be something like: "The driver you selected is already
installed on your system. Would you like to overwrite the driver or keep the
existing one?"
There is no point in reinstalling a printer again because all printer options
you changed are saved in ~/.lpoptions and will be back after reinstalling. A
button "Use system wide settings" at the bottom of the printer properties page
could be very usefull to reset all user specific options in ~/.lpoptions to the
system wide default settings (which are normally the first time install settings).
I think reinstalling a "driver" should be possible (for newer or better
version), therefore:
Selecting "overwrite" should also reset all printer options for the printer in
~/.lpoptions and /etc/cups/lpoptions
Selecting "keep" should keep the user specific and system-wide printer options
in ~/.lpoptions and /etc/cups/lpoptions
