Ubuntu | gnome-cups-manager

Summary: HP 870Cxi doesn't work in amd64 Breezy, but does in
                    windows
           Product: Ubuntu
           Version: unspecified
          Platform: amd64
        OS/Version: Linux
            Status: UNCONFIRMED
          Severity: normal
          Priority: P2
         Component: gnome-cups-manager

Hi,

This printer works fine in Windows. So I know it's possible. The printer also
worked with an older Debian box running woody (and it was not amd64, just plain
i386). The printer is connected by parallel port. I set up a printer with:
Menu System -> Administration -> Printing -> New Printer -> local printer,
printer port: parallel port #1 -> HP -> Deskjet 870C

As I try printing a test page using different drivers, different disappointing
things happen:
hpijs: starts printing a line of garbage characters on infinite pieces of paper.
Must cancel job, unplug printer, and reboot machine to restore sanity to the
printer.
gimp-print: starts printing a line of garbage characters on infinite pieces of
paper. Must cancel job, unplug printer, and reboot machine to restore sanity to
the printer.
cdj850: gnome-cups-manager crashes with the gnome crash dialog. No print job is
created but LED on printer blinks a few times (as if it's starting to think
about printing), then goes back to being solid (meaning it's standing by).
pcl3: gnome-cups-manager crashes with the gnome crash dialog. No print job is
created but LED on printer blinks a few times (as if it's starting to think
about printing), then goes back to being solid (meaning it's standing by).

So I'm positive it's not user error. I think this bug is either Ubuntu-specific
or amd64-specific.
