I just had the error again :-(

Anyway, I tried to use another - newly created - user to login and that failed too.

Then I saw that 'firestarter' was running at the shutdown. I rebooted, removed
firestarter (apt-get remove), logged in and everything was fine.

So the fault must lie with firestarter.
