ii  gnome-control-center     2.12.1-0ubuntu2          utilities to configure the
GNOME desktop
ii  xorg-common              6.8.2-77                 X Window System (X.Org)
infrastructure

_XKB_RULES_NAMES(STRING) = "xfree86", "pc105", "ch", "fr", "grp:alts_toggle"


marc at cotonou:~$ gconftool-2 -R /desktop/gnome/peripherals/keyboard/kbd
 layouts = [ch  fr]
 model =
 options = [grp grp:alts_toggle]
 overrideSettings = true

After a bit more experimentation, I don't no if it is releated to xorg or to
gnome-control-center ?
