ok - adding myself to the plugdev group and rebooting fixed the problem! Thank you!

I went out on a limb and added myself to the scanner group and rebooted, now my
scanner works as non-root!

So this bug is now: Why didn't the ubuntu installer put the default user I
created into these groups? Isn't it kind of probably that the user will want
such devices to just work? It seems kind of frustrating to have the whole hal
infrastructure together but disabled from such a simple permissions problem?
