Had some major problems with the Hoary/Breezy install and had to do a fresh
instal of Breezy on top so can't access the /var/log anymore :( The message I
was getting was in GDM: I typed in username then password. Then before starting
to take me to Gnome a popup window would inform me that (aproximately) "we have
a problem with .dmrc where we keep settings for the desktop. Make sure it is
owned by user and is 644."  Just pressing OK would make it go away and I didn't
notice any other problems from it. 

I read that making the home directory 755 solves the bug but that's not
something I'd want to do.
