I have just realized that your
> sudo strace mount -t vfat /dev/hdc1 /mnt 2> mount.trace
did indeed mount my card:
$ mount
[...]
/dev/hdc1 on /mnt type vfat (rw)
$ ls -la /mnt
total 22
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 16384 1970-01-01 01:00 .
drwxr-xr-x 22 root root 4096 2005-09-09 13:19 ..
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 5 2005-09-09 14:31 32mb
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 0 2005-09-09 14:31 32mb~
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 0 2005-09-09 14:27 hello.txt
(this is the content of my card)
However, the disc mounter (in the task bar) does not see the disc as mounted.
"Open ATA_FLASH" is disabled, and "Mount ATA_FLASH" gives an error message.
Opening ATA_FLASH from "Computer" in Nautilus sometimes opens the card, but
immediately switches to "Home" and opens a second Nautilus, also displaying
"Home". But sometimes I just get "Mount Error, Unable to mount the selected
volume, mount: special device /dev/hdc1 does not exist (*2)" and Nautilus does
not open a directory.
