I sent USR2 signals to gamin_server and nautilus as you suggested, and have
attached the 2 log files that it generated.

Here's what happened.

I have 9 things on my desktop (not counting the .directory file):

When I sent the debugging signals, C.txt was already invisible.  A, B, D and E
were OK.

I sent the signals at 14:25:30 or so.

At 14:26:00 I hit F5 and C.txt came back.

At 14:28:37 E.txt vanished.  logfile sizes were like this:

At 14:29:25 - A, B and D also vanished.  only C.txt survives.  logfile sizes
were like this:

    -rw-------  1 chris chris 64139 2005-09-19 14:29 gamin_debug_ZVGuOA (line 923)

    noteworthy new lines:

    gamin_debug_pZGj0D line 278 : FAMNextEvent : Deleted : /home/chris/Desktop/A.txt
    gamin_debug_pZGj0D line 282 : FAMNextEvent : Deleted : /home/chris/Desktop/B.txt
    gamin_debug_pZGj0D line 286 : FAMNextEvent : Deleted : /home/chris/Desktop/D.txt

I left it for another 10 or 15 minutes.  C.txt wouldn't vanish.  It's still OK
now at 14:52.

My system isn't particularly loaded.  It's not doing a lot of disk access.  All
my filesystems are reiser4 if that makes any difference.
