Do you happen to know, if dmix works for you? If not, you can try this:
   $ aplay /usr/share/sounds/startup.wav &
   $ aplay /usr/share/sounds/shutdown.wav

If you hear both sounds, dmix should work for you, if not, could you please
paste the output of
   $ uname -a
and
   $ aplay -l
