I debugged this a little and talked with James.

The core problem is that drivemount-applet does not display a gnome-vfs volume
if there is already a gnome-vfs drive; however, drives do not have an activation
URI, nor have they a label. So as long as a volume is mounted, dm-a should
display the volume, so that the user gets a nice name (partition label instead
of drive name) and a working activation URI (this bug). After the volume is
unmounted, the drive should be displayed to allow the user to remount.
