Ubuntu | nautilus

Summary: Removable media icon should stay on desktop until data
                    sync is done
           Product: Ubuntu
           Version: unspecified
          Platform: i386
        OS/Version: other
            Status: UNCONFIRMED
          Severity: normal
          Priority: P2
         Component: nautilus
        AssignedTo: seb128 at ubuntu.com
        ReportedBy: emmanuel.pacaud at univ-poitiers.fr
         QAContact: desktop-bugs at lists.ubuntu.com

Copy a big file (50Mb) to an USB 1 memory key.

Copy process starts, nautilus shows a progress dialog, who disappears after copy
completion (well after copy to computer memory buffer is completed).

Then click on media desktop icon, select unmount: icon disappears.

That makes you think its safe to remove your memory key.

The problem is at this time, real copy is not completed, kernel is still
flushing its data memory buffer to the memory key. If you remove your key, your
file is corrupted. Kernel shows a lot of IO errors on text console.

Nautilus should not remove removable media icon until data write to media is
done, for example by waiting the end of something similar to CLI sync command.

And, to be HIG compliant, it should show a dialog if sync lasts more than 1
second, ideally displaying a status progress bar.
