I can confirm this with the sample provided.
Some info below:
carthik at umberto:~$ file PS9.pdf
PS9.pdf: PDF document, version 1.2
carthik at umberto:~$ apropos PS9.pdf
PS9.pdf: nothing appropriate.

Also, I tried to open it with gedit, and I got the following error:
Could not open the file /home/carthik/PS9.pdf.

gedit has not been able to detect the character coding.
Please check that you are not trying to open a binary file.
Select a character coding from the menu and try again.
