xscreensaver-gl-helper is included in the xscreensaver-gl package, so you can assume its always available if GL hacks are installed, i'd go that path. adding info the .desktop files is easy, reading it is the harder part i think. directly including a GL dependency into g-s-s is something that should rather be done upstream imho, what do others think ?
