Yea, I have the same issues. An example file is:

gst-typefind-0.10 01.\ Get\ Your\ Snack\ On.mpc
>01. Get Your Snack On.mpc - application/x-apetag

In Rhythmbox I have the exact same behavior as you all. In Totem, they actually play, but almost every time it tries to switch to the next song it stops, and I have to manually skip to the next/double click one in the playlist.

I got a gdb trace of what happens in Rhythmbox [at the end of playing an MP3, when it tries to switch track to an MPC].
